Dark Mofo

June 21, 2018

Last Friday night we went into Hobart to have a look at the Dark Mofo Festival - well all the free bits anyway :)

The Dark Mofo festival started 5 years ago and is the winter / nighttime version of the Mona Foma festival. It has been controversial nearly every year This is the 2nd time we have been and it was awesome both times!

The main free part was at Dark Park which is down near the waterfront. On the way you are confronted with one of this year's controversy's, the upside down cross. Of course you have people wanting to take it down as it causes offence, don't get me started. Anyways they looked great! There were 3 or 4 of them along the waterfront.

We went into one of the sheds where we watched a puppet show of The Spider and The Fly  which was really enjoyable and both a 4yr old and an 84yr old enjoyed it.

Then we saw the Ogoh-Ogoh Spider as pictured below with it's egg sacs. You write your fear on a piece of paper and put it in the spider or its eggs and then they burn it and the fears on June 24th. They have had different Ogoh-Ogoh's each year, this year the spider.

We then went for a walk to another shed which had a fantastic laser display that you could play in. Needless to say Master 4 loved this (and so did we all)

We then walked back to the main entrance where now lit up was a great display made from lights in tins such as old formula tins as well as a lovely big bonfire.

There were bars and other sections that we didn't go to because of the 4 yr old but we finished the night with some dinner next to a submission salon which covered your eyes and mouth with tape and transformed you. Oh I wish I had the guts to do that! Maybe another time. On the way back to the car we passed lots of performance artists in the windows of the Uni, interesting....I am not really into performance art. Mr 4 thought bits were funny though.

Anyways that was just 1 night of a 2 week festival that I recommend you come and see.

Tomorrow, to celebrate the Winter Solstice, there is a nudie swim at dawn which, last year they ran out of towels cause more people than expected turned up! No plans to join them this year but maybe one year I shall.

The art scene in Hobart and Tas in general is fantastic and part of the reason I love it here.
