Fairy Rings and Other Things

April 23, 2018

We have had some more visitors today but the most exciting would have to be Fairies!

We found this gorgeous mushroom circle in our front yard. Rob and mum instantly said it was fairies. I had not heard about this so I did some investigations.

'Fairy rings appear rather suddenly, so stories were made up to explain these mysterious and fascinating rings. In countries other than England, they were thought to be made by such forces as lightning, meteorites, witches, sorcerers, and the devil. It was generally believed to be bad luck to enter a ring of mushrooms, and some believed that the milk of cows grazing inside the ring would not be drinkable. But, some people believed that a house built in a field that has a fairy ring would have good luck.' http://grandpacliff.com/Fungi/FairyRings.htm

'Fairy ring, a naturally occurring circular ring of mushrooms on a lawn or other location. A fairy ring starts when the mycelium (spawn) of a mushroom falls in a favourable spot and sends out a subterranean network of fine, tubular threads called hyphae. The hyphae grow out from the sporeevenly in all directions, forming a circular mat of underground hyphal threads. The mushrooms that grow up from this circular underground mat form a similar pattern above ground. Gradually the underground mycelium at the centre of the circle dies out. Its living outer edges, however, keep growing year by year, and hence the diameter of the ring gradually increases. Over time the ring’s underground segments die out, until the ring form on the surface can no longer be discerned.' https://www.britannica.com/science/fairy-ring

So lets hope it is good luck yeah?

We also had some more visitors today. First one was this gorgeous skink and the second the lovely dragonfly.

Both of these little fellas were found inside the house and directed to safety. The skink was amazing. You could see him breathing and his skin was just beautiful.

Lastly is our mystery guest. These 2 holes about 10cm diameter each were not there yesterday. Someone came visiting last night. They are right outside our front door. First thing Rob thought was a bandicoot but it is strange that there are only 2.

More investigation will need to be done here I think.

There are also strange little holes all over the garden where it looks like something has dug down and blown up volcano like the dirt. I have not got a picture of these but it is all so very interesting learning about our new environments.

More weeding done today. I took a moment to appreciate Rob, Mum and I weeding whilst Felix was drawing in the beautiful sunshine and everyone was smiling. It was lovely. Here is lovely.

So many more adventures ahead of us!
